The Hindu group relaunches Sports Star magazine in Fortnightly Format

There is a new avatar of Sports Star, one of the popular sports magazines in India from the Hindu Group, in a fortnightly format. Union Sports Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathor relaunched  the Sportstar magazine as a fortnightly, at the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday. Originally published as Sport and Pastime, on September 10, 1947. The original magazine stopped publication in 1968, took a rebirth after one decade in 1978 and took the tabloid format.  The Co-Chairperson of The Hindu Group of Publications, Ms. Malini Parthasarathy, sports stars and other sports journalists were present.

Among the sport stars present on the occasion included Rio Olympics silver medallist P.V. Sindhu, her coach and former All England champion P. Gopi Chand, former India cricket captain Bishan Singh Bedi and others. Sports magazines like Sportstar, Sportsweek and Sportsworld could not get enough advertisers who were passionate about television and not magazines. While Sports star had over 100000 circulations during the peak of its popularity, the circulation came down drastically, leading to its closure. Whether the revamped version will be able to attract advertisers and readers is a million dollar question, given the current market scenario. Print magazines and periodicals are closing down due to declining readership, the onslaught of social media and television.
